Headquarters of 8 Division of the Nigerian Army has denied allegations of torture and maltreatment of detainees at its Provost Group detention facility in Giginya Cantonment, Sokoto in North-West Nigeria.
The response follows online reports linking the death of Lance Corporal Bala Hudu to alleged brutalisation and inhumane treatment while in custody.
In a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant-Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, the Army acknowledged a petition by Chief Malcolm Emokiniovo Omirhobo.
However, the Army described the allegations as misinformation, reaffirming its commitment to discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights.
Setting the record straight, the Army explained that in April 2023, the late Lance Corporal Bala Hudu was involved in the killing of a commercial motorcycle operator in Katsina State. This led to a military police investigation and subsequent court martial.
During the proceedings, it was discovered that the soldier had underlying health conditions, including hyperopia, allergic conjunctivitis, and high blood pressure. He was reportedly receiving ongoing medical care at the 8 Division Medical Services Hospital.

Due to his health condition, the Army said he was granted unrestricted access to his family and legal counsel, and was placed under continuous medical supervision, including the assignment of a nursing assistant.
He later complained of headache, body weakness, and rapid breathing, and was diagnosed with severe right lobar pneumonia and malaria, for which he received treatment.
According to the statement, his condition deteriorated on April 17, 2026, leading to his death, likely due to complications arising from his pre-existing medical conditions.
The Army has dismissed claims of torture, intimidation, or reprisals against detainees as false and misleading.
Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding, GOC, 8 Division has ordered an independent Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.
The Army says the process is ongoing and assured that it remains open to scrutiny to ensure justice and accountability.
