Assailants beat, rape UNIBEN student in RCCG church building

A 23-year old girl who was a 100 level Microbiology student of the University of Benin has died after she was allegedly beaten and raped inside her church at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG Province 10 Zonal Headquarters in Ikpoba Hill area of Benin City, the Edo State capital

The victim, Uwaila Omozuwa according to her family members had gone to the Church as usual to read when her assailants who are yet to be identified struck, on Wednesday, May 27.

The church gateman allegedly met her in a pool of blood, alerted some church members who rushed her to a nearby hospital, and subsequently to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital UBTH where she went into coma and died in the early hours of Sunday.

ait.live visited the bereaved family at their Ohovbe residence amid wailing and they are calling for justice having reported to the police in the area.

In her account of the story, the victim’s sister, Judith Omozuwa says she usually reads inside the church because of the serene environment and she collects the key of the building from the security man at his residence but on Wednesday, the mother received a call that Uwaila was badly injured, raped and left in a pool of her blood.

On a visit to the church premises, we noticed an attempt to vandalise the building allegedly by youths in the area who are angry over the incident.

The Student Union Government of the University of Benin led by the President, Benjamin Lutan also visited the scene of the incident and has expressed displeasure over the ugly incident and is calling on the police to do proper investigation and bring the perpetrators to book in the next 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki has mandated the police and other security agencies to fish out the culprits who perpetuated the dastardly act and bring them to justice.
