The Emir of Bauchi, Dr. Rilwanu Suleiman Adamu, says traditional institutions play a critical role in sustaining peaceful coexistence within communities. He cautioned village heads against accommodating suspicious visitors and urged them to report any threats to security agencies.
The Emir gave the charge during the official turbaning of 67 newly appointed village heads from three local government areas, as well as the new Ter Tiv of the Tiv community in Bauchi.
Traditional institutions, especially in rural areas, are seen as key players in grassroots peacebuilding and early conflict resolution forming part of every nation’s broader security architecture.
It was against this backdrop that the Emir charged the newly turbaned village heads to foster peace and cooperation within their domains.
“Make sure you maintain peace with everyone. Do not accept strangers in your community without verifying their identity. Avoid land disputes and resolve minor issues within your powers.”

The Emir also praised leaders of non-indigenous communities for their contributions to peaceful coexistence in Bauchi State and urged them to deepen their engagement.
Following the turbaning ceremony, the new community leaders, including the Ter Tiv, took part in a traditional horse ride a symbol of authority and acceptance.
This was followed by vibrant cultural performances from the Tiv ethnic group in celebration of the event.
