Civil Society Organisations have lamented the high number of people practising open defecation, due to a lack of access to basic social amenities.
They expressed their concern during a press conference, in commemoration of this year’s World Toilet Day in Bauchi State, North-East Nigeria.
The leader of the group, Jinjiri Garba says, statistics have revealed that forty-eight million people practice open defecation in Nigeria, while more than twenty per cent of the Bauchi population still practice open defecation, a situation the group says is alarming.

Jinjiri Garba noted that there is the need for people to collectively embark on a massive campaign and advocacy on the dangers of open defecation in society, for healthy living and a hygienic environment.
As the world moves towards achieving, Safe Toilets And Water For All By The Year 2030, the group says people’s actions would help improve the toilet and sanitation systems, thereby protecting nature.
