The Local Government Amendment Bill 2020 put forward by the leader of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Monday Obolo, was passed within hours of its presentation on the floor of the Assembly.
The bill was passed through an accelerated hearing even though some of the lawmakers expressed their reservations over the passage of the bill.
The amendment bill was part of proceedings on Wednesday’s legislative business at the Assembly.
Before its passage, some members frowned at provisions of the bill that would allow the state government dig deeper into allocation to the local governments from the federation account.
Lawmakers in support of the bill, however, gave reasons for their support for the legislation.
