Amid heightened political realignments across the country, Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, officially defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC, about three weeks after resigning from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The Governor made the declaration at a grand reception in Yenagoa, attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, and other top APC stalwarts.

The Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa was filled to capacity as party supporters, political appointees, and lawmakers gathered to witness what many describe as a major political shift in Bayelsa State.

Governor Douye Diri, alongside national and state lawmakers and all political appointees of the state government, announces defection to the ruling APC.

The Governor receives the APC flag from the party’s National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda.

He says his decision of leaving the PDP is based on the prolonged leadership crisis in the party and also borne out of the need to align Bayelsa State with the Federal Government in order to attract more development to the state.

Vice President Kashim Shettima, while welcoming the new members, commended their courage and urges the Governor to unite the party in the state to drive sustainable development.

The defection marks a significant political realignment in Bayelsa State, signaling the end of an era for the PDP, which has governed the state since its creation.
