Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, is questioning Nigeria’s practice of federalism, calling for further decentralization of power to enable the federal government concentrate on burning issues affecting the country at large

While delivering a lecture at the 64th Founders’ Day Lecture of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Governor Diri stressed that Nigeria is on the path away from development and needs redirection.

Speaking on the theme “Rethinking Our Future: the need for true federalism and economic renaissance he reaffirmef his belief in the unity of Nigeria, which he says can only be sustained on the basis of equity, justice and fairness .

Acting Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Polycarp Chigbu said the timing of the event, to celebrate the vision of the founding fathers of the university is apt, given the current realities in the country.

Among other issues that dominated the lecture, are resource control, state policing and the need for states to constitutionally have the right to create and legislate on local governments
The event is to celebrate the founding fathers of the institution including late former Nigerian President, Nnamdi Azikiwe, whose vision brought about the tertiary institution’s establishment on October 7, 1960.
