Bayelsa Governorship Election: Supreme Court set to hear Timi Alaibe’s appeal

The Supreme Court is set to hear the appeal filed by the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Timi Alaibe on the twenty-third of June, 2020 challenging the election of Senator Duoye Diri as the Governor of Bayelsa State.

The panel presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Mohammed on Monday asked the applicant to regularize his processes having withdrawn two applications pending before the court.

An Appeal Court sitting in Owerri, the Imo State capital had in May 2020 dismissed a suit filed by the former Bayelsa governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party, Timi Alaibe against the state governor, Senator Duoye Diri.

Alaibe is challenging the emergence of Senator Diri as the legitimate winner of the PDP primaries held on September 3, 2019, which also produced him as the governor of the state.

The former governorship aspirant had dragged Senator Douye Diri and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to court over what he described as a ‘flawed process’ of the PDP primary.

The appeal filed by one Abubakar Ibrahim challenging the candidacy of Musa Wada as the Governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 Kogi State Governorship election will also be heard on the same date. Lawyers to both parties defend their position on the matter.

The Appeal Court had in separate judgments dismissed the appeals filed by Timi Alaibe and Abubakar Ibrahim both of the Peoples Democratic Party challenging the election of Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa State and the candidacy of Musa Wada as the candidate of the party in Kogi State.
