The training of teachers, medical and social personnel has become necessary in improving knowledge and practices to prevent drug abuse and illicit substances in Nigeria.
Bayelsa Governor, Douye Diri highlighted this at the opening ceremony of the four-day training in Yenagoa, tagged “Unplugged Drug Abuse Prevention Programme for Secondary Schools in Bayelsa State”. He affirmed that his administration will ensure the success of policies geared towards combating the menace in the state.
The illicit use of drugs among youths and adolescents in Nigeria has been on the high side over the years and this has caught the attention of the Bayelsa state Government which has taken steps to address it.
The training programme organised by the State Government in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime is designed to drive government’s plans for a drug abuse-free Bayelsa State.
Bayelsa State is ranked second in Nigeria that has adopted the European Union programme on drug abuse prevention in schools with 124 teachers already selected to be trained, for a start.
To achieve a crime free society, political office holders and parents were advised to join efforts with government and the partners to prevent drug abuse.
