The People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Benue State Chapter, has called on the good people of the state and other Nigerians to recognize the grim reality unfolding under the Hyacinth Alia-led APC government in the state.
In a statement by its publicity secretary Tim Nyor, the PDP says barely two years into office the Governor has reduced governance to a theatre of perpetual fights, reckless vendettas, and ceaseless instability.
According to it, his administration is defined not by service to the people, but by relentless quarrels with allies, institutions, and stakeholders.
The PDP further stated that from the outset, Governor Alia chose confrontation over collaboration and rather than unite Benue, he opposes his benefactor, Senator George Akume and other respected political leaders, senators, and representatives.
It also alleged that the governor turned his hostility against his own party by forcefully attempting to hijack the structures of the APC to remove Austin Agada as state chairman.
The opposition party maintained that the brazen move, condemned even by members of the governor’s party, exposed his hunger for absolute control and his disdain for internal democracy.
While stating that Governor Alia in a most reckless and unconstitutional attempt, sought to sack the Chief Judge of the state simply because the judiciary will not bow to his whims.
It said though his ill-fated attempt was defeated, it revealed his deep contempt for the rule of law and separation of powers.
The PDP went on to say that Governor Alia’s cruelty was extended to his own cabinet as the Secretary to the State Government, also from Kwande, was disgracefully branded a “thief” and thrown out and the Chief of Staff who was the next to be dealt with was tossed aside without reason and dismissed without honour.
The statement also said that commissioners have been sacked at will, as if governance is a circus of vendettas, adding that the most shocking is the action against the Speaker of the State House of Assembly who was removed under the governor’s influence, plunging the legislature into needless turmoil and further destabilizing the state.
While pointing out that a government consumed by quarrels cannot deliver development,
PDP cautioned Governor Alia that power is fleeting and history unforgiving, adding that if he continues on the path of reckless strife, he will be remembered not as a builder of Benue State but as its destroyer.
The People’s Democratic Party reaffirmed its solidarity with the suffering masses of the state, noting that Governor Alia may choose strife, but the people of Benue will choose progress.
