As part of measures to mitigate perennial problem of flooding in parts of Benue State, the Government has disclosed plans to review its sanitation law to make provision for stiffer penalties for offenders who build on water channels and dump refuse indiscriminately into the drainages.
State Commissioner for Water Resources and Environment, Godwin Oyiwona made this known during an inspection tour of the flood affected areas within Makurdi the State capital.
The perennial problem of flooding in parts of the nation food basket informed the assessment visit by the Commissioner for Environment and Water resources Godwin Oyiwona.
At Agbo village, an extension of Wadata and Mobile barracks along Naka road, Oyiwona identified indiscriminate building on water channels as a major cause of flooding which the State is looking closely into with a view to amend the law to attract stiffer penalties for offenders.
According to the Commissioner, the State is still under threat of flood as the flood gauge has continued to rise in the past few days owing to persistent down pour.
