The Benue State Government has launched its Peace and Reconciliation Commission’s Five-Year Strategic Plan (2026–2030), marking a renewed commitment to restoring lasting peace, strengthening security, and improving livelihoods across the state.
A document it says is anchored on dialogue, mitigation, reconciliation, inclusive social cohesion, and the strengthening of conflict prevention mechanisms.
The long anticipated five year strategic plan was inaugurated by the State Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by his deputy Sam Ode at the new banquet hall of the Government house Makurdi, close to four years after the establishment of the state’s peace and reconciliation commission.
Minister of livestock development Idi Mukhtar Maiha commended the State’s peace driven initiatives assuring the State of the Federal Government’s continued support through agricultural and job creation programmes aimed at engaging youth and addressing the root cause of insecurity.
Chairman State Council Of Chiefs the Tor Tiv Professor James Ayatse pledged the full support of the traditional institution to implement the plan.
Representative of the British High commission and the team lead of strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRING) Nkimbo Ukaha lauded the grassroots driven and consultation nature of the initiative promising development partners support for its full implementation.
Presenting the keynote address on pathways of implementing the strategic plan Dr Hussaini Abdu stressed that peace building is a gradual and deliberate process requiring coordinated efforts.
Director General Benue State Commission for Peace and Reconciliation Josephine Habba explained that the 2026–2030 plan is designed to coordinate and promote all actions that enhance peace and strategic stability in the state.
The Benue State Peace and reconciliation commission was established in September 2022 with a mandate to ensure timely management of emerging disputes and positive transformation of working relationships between government, civil society, and the community.
