The detained Binance executive, Tigran Gambaryan, standing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja has slumped during Court proceedings on Thursday.
The defendant is accused of foreign exchange contravention and money laundering by the Nigerian ant-grant agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mark Mordi (SAN) had informed the Court that Gambaryan had not felt too well since the last date of trial.
When the matter commenced, Gambaryan was assisted to the dock by a lawyer, and despite the assistance, he defendant couldn’t continue standing.
Mordi however told Justice Emeka Nwite that he had a letter detailing his client’s health conditions and asked the cyourt to adjourn so that the defendant could be given adequate medical attention.
Counsel for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ekele Iheanacho, did not oppose the request for an adjournment.
The Court therefore fixed June 20 and 21 for cross-examination and continuation of trial.
ait.live recalls that on February 28, Nigerian authorities had detained two senior Binance executives, Nadeem Anjarwalla, a 37-year-old British-Kenyan who serves as the regional manager for Africa, and Tigran Gambaryan, a 39-year-old American who is the Head of Financial Crime Compliance at Binance, a crypto currency company.
But, Nadeem Anjarwalla fled the Country on March 22, 2024 to avoid been tried, leaving behind Tigran Gambaryan to face multiple court charges in Nigeria.
