The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, Sunday lamented the massive brain drain in the country’s health sector and called for better working conditions for healthcare providers.
The Bishop was speaking at the Capping/Matriculation ceremony for fresher nursing and midwifery students of the College of Nursing Sciences, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi Nnukwu in Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, South East Nigeria, which is one of the healthcare facilities run by the Catholic church.
The clergy is appealing to governments at all levels to create an enabling environment for healthcare professionals in the country to avoid the massive brain drain and migration of health workers in the country.
Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Adam Obidike praised the Catholic church for its partnerships with the government in the provision of quality healthcare services to the people, saying that Governor Soludo-led administration was doing a lot in the health sector.
Some medical practitioners speak on the challenges being faced in the health sector and ways that they could be addressed.
About 175 new students for both the nursing and midwifery programmes were capped.
