Blackout As National Grid Collapses For Sixth Time in 2024

Nigeria’s National Power grid has collapsed for the sixth time in 2024, plunging the country into darkness.

This recent collapse occurred on Monday, October 14, 2024.

According to the Nigerian System Operator’s portal, the grid recorded zero megawatts between 7:00 pm and the time of reporting.

Despite the widespread impact of the blackout, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not given any reason for the Grid Collapse, leaving the public and stakeholders in the dark about the source and resolution of the newest crisis.

The country has experienced series of grid disturbances this year, with the first blackout occurring on February 4, 2024, when the national power grid collapsed at 11:51 AM, causing the system’s capacity to drop from 2,407 megawatts to zero by 1 PM.

Another Grid Collapse occurred on April 15, 2024
at 2:42 AM.

On July 6, 2024 ,Another grid collapse happened at 3:00 PM.

On August 5, 2024, The fifth blackout of the year occurred.

And on October 14, 2024
The sixth grid collapse, marking the latest in a series of power outages.

ait.live reports that These recurring power outages highlight the challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, including inadequate infrastructure, gas supply problems, and transmission system constraints.
