Some Youths in Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to relax the border closure order to enable the people of the area celebrate Christmas with money in their pockets.
The youths, who described themselves as friends of Ex- Bakassi Freedom Agitators, said the border closure has taken tolls on the community’s economy negatively as fish, rice, and fuel business they do with Cameroon have been stopped by the Joint Security Task Force deployed to the area.
Bakassi is sharing maritime border with Cameroon but the nearby Cameroonian villages depend largely on commodities coming from Nigeria for their survival through Bakassi land border.
The youths said that feeding themselves and their families have become difficult due to the border closure, wondering how the yuletide would be celebrated in their homes.
But an Economist, Dr Idenyi Emmanuel, described the Federal Government’s decision to close the border as the best for the economy; for the short, medium, and long term gains.
