Some Medical experts say a deepened interagency collaboration and the establishment of Neuro medical centers across the country will assist victims of brain and spinal injuries in Nigeria.
The medical experts said this during the National Brain and Spine Injury Conference on Wednesday in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Brain and spine injury remain one of the deadly medical conditions capable of keeping victims incapacitated for life.
These Nigerians, Okechukwu Okoro and Chike Okogwu, a medical Doctor, are both victims of brain and spine injuries.
while Chike Okogwu has spent seventeen years on a wheelchair and still able to manage his medical situation, the same cannot be said of the ten-year-old Okechukwu Okoro who became a victim of traumatic brain and spine injury as a result of a hit-and-run driver.
Available statistics indicate that over seventy percent of brain and spine injuries are caused by road crashes.
What then is the Federal road safety doing to reduce incidences of brain and spine injury in Nigeria?
Facilitator of the Conference said the idea was to bring relevant bodies together to seek ways to help victims of brain and spine injury.
Statistics have also shown that one point five million persons died from road crashes globally while fifty million sustained injuries with about thirty-five million people having brain and spine injuries.
