The Presidency confirms terrorist attack on convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of President Muhammadu Buhari to his hometown of Daura in Katsina State, North-West Nigeria. The President is expected to embark on a trip to Daura for the Eid-El Kabir celebration.

The attack on the convoy of security guards, protocol and media officers was a shooting incident near Dutsinma in Katsina State, which has been described by the Presidency as sad and unwelcome.

The attackers according to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu on Tuesday evening opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the military, police and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy.

Two unnamed persons in the convoy were affected by the attack and they are receiving treatment for the minor injuries they sustained.

All the other personnel, staff and vehicles are said to have made it safely to Daura to await the arrival of President Buhari.

The police had earlier confirmed that terrorists operating in Safana Forest in Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State have killed the Area Commander of Dutsinma, ACP Aminu Umar, in an ambush.

Command spokesperson, Superintendent Gambo Isah said, “at about 1130hrs Tuesday, a distress call was received, that terrorists numbering over 300, on motorcycles, shooting sporadically with AK-47 rifles and General Purpose Machine Guns, GPMGs, ambushed ACP Aminu Umar, Area Commander, Dutsinma and his team, while on clearance operation, in Zakka Forest, Safana Local Government Area of Katsina State”.

According to Isah, the Area Commander and one other officer lost their lives in the attack.

He added that the Commissioner of Police, Idris Dabban, on behalf of the officers and men of the Command, has expressed his deepest sympathy to the families of the deceased, and prayed to Almighty Allah, to repose their souls in Jannatul Firdausi.

Dabban further reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment, to the ongoing onslaught against terrorism in the state, until it is completely routed out.
