The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Building Collapse Prevention Guild (BCPG) have called for the prosecution of individuals and establishments responsible for building collapse cases in the country.
The two bodies, who made the joint call at an advocacy programme in Lagos, said this will deter quackery and the construction of substandard buildings, especially in Lagos, where building collapse cases have been frequent.
Human Rights Lawyer, Femi Falana and other speakers expressed concern over the seeming lack of political will to enforce building codes, prosecute violators and compensate victims and their families.
Lagos State Attorney-General Lawal Pedro, highlighted the state government’s efforts at preventing building collapse cases promising increased monitoring of all building sites and full enforcement of existing laws guiding construction work.
The advocacy programme with the theme ‘Building Collapse and Application of Punitive Laws in Lagos State’ was attended by lawyers and professionals in building and construction.
