Following the explosion at the generator section of the Canadian High Commission in Abuja, the country has temporarily suspended its operations, while warning its nationals against non-essential travel to Nigeria.
On Monday, an explosion occurred during routine maintenance of two of the High Commission’s generator plants, sparking an explosion that killed two of the maintenance personnel, before an ensuing power outage was eventually put out.
In a social media post, the Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, wrote:
“We can confirm there was an explosion at our High Commission in Nigeria. The fire is out, and we are working to shed light on what caused this situation. I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of the two people killed in this tragedy.”
Canada’s High Commission in Nigeria also said on social media that it had “temporarily suspended operations until further notice”.
