South-East nominee for membership of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN Board of Directors , Urum Kalu Eke has rejected his appointment as Senate confirms nomination of four others by President Bola Tinubu.

The rejection by the nominee was disclosed on the floor by Senator Orji Uzor Kalu during consideration of the report of the Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions presented by the Chairman Adetokunbo Abiru (APC Lagos East),

According to Senator Kalu, the nominee called him that he was declining the appointment to avoid conflict of interest. He explained that as a current consultant to the World Bank and other international financial institutions the commitments will make him not have the required time to function well, as one of the CBN Board members.

Earlier, Chairman of Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and other Financial Institutions, Adetokunbo Abiru had in his report presentation for confirmation of the nominees informed the Senate that four other nominees, Robert Agbede, Ado Yakubu Wanka, Professor Murtala Sabo Sagagi and Muslimat Olanike Aliyu appeared before the Committee for screening.

Senator Abiru said all the four nominees demonstrated comprehensive grasp of economic knowledge and policies and no petition against any of them was received by his Committee.

He thereafter urged the Senate to confirm the appointments of the four nominees who attended the screening session and step down that of Kalu Eke who did not attend the exercise.

The Senate accordingly confirmed the appointment of the nominees as members of the CBN Board of Directors.
