KANO STATE

A coalition of civil society organizations have questioned the role of the judiciary, alleging an attempt to truncate the local government elections in Kano State scheduled for Saturday.

Executive Director, Citizens for Development and Education Ibrahim Waiya, at a news conference in Kano, particularly raised concerns about judgements delivered by Justice Simon Amobeda of the Federal High Court which appears to undermine democracy and governance in the state.

It’s less than twenty-four hours to the conduct of local government elections in Kano state, and the court presided by Justice Simon Amobeda of the Kano division of the federal high court. has sacked the Kano State Independent Election Commission and its members

The Executive Director, Citizens for Development and Education Ibrahim Waiya and his counterpart from the Organization for Community Civic Engagement raise concerns that the judiciary is being used against the people of Kano state.

The CSOs are particularly not satisfied with the postering of Justice Simon Amobeda, suggesting that he has sinister motives.

Despite these controversies with two judgements being expected from the state and federal high courts, the state government says it is going on with the election.

The Civil society leaders call on the chief justice of Nigeria and the national judicial council to call justice Amobeda to order and moderate what they call his judicial excesses.
