Members of civil society organizations in Edo State held a peaceful protest across major roads in Benin City, voicing support for Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration in its ongoing battle against cultism.
While they applauded the government’s efforts so far, the protesters expressed concerns over the method of demolishing properties allegedly linked to cult activities.
The peaceful procession, organized by members of Edo State civil society organisation, saw protesters marching through key areas of Benin City before converging at the Government House gate
There, they were received by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu.
The leader of the group Agho Omobude presented a protest letter to the commissioner, declaring their support for Governor Okpebholo’s stance against cultism.
While the protesters backed the government’s firm stance against cultism, they strongly opposed the demolition of properties allegedly linked to cult activities, raising concerns about due process.
The protesters also condemned what they described as police harassment, intimidation, and extortion of innocent citizens under the guise of a cultism crackdown. They called for a more just and transparent process in enforcing law and order.

Ohonbamu appreciated the activists for backing the government’s anti-cultism initiatives. He further clarified the administration’s rationale and actions taken so far in the fight.
Governor Okpebholo has repeatedly affirmed that there will be no retreat in the fight against cultism in the state.
