The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kekere-Ekun, and the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), have highlighted the critical role of the judiciary in navigating the complexities of the country’s evolving electricity sector.
Speaking at the 2025 National Seminar on Regulations in Electricity Power Sector for Judicial Officers, Justice Kekere-Ekun noted that the judiciary must be prepared to meet new demands arising from the sector’s transformation.
The CJN emphasized the significance of the Electricity Act 2023, which introduces a dual regulatory framework, and urged the judiciary to interpret and enforce the Act’s provisions to ensure fairness, accountability, and consumer protection.
In his remarks, AGF Lateef Fagbemi underscored the importance of the judiciary in ensuring that regulatory bodies like NERC operate within the bounds of the law.
He emphasized the need for swift and informed determination of electricity-related cases to maintain investor confidence and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

They also drew attention to the pressing issue of safety within the electricity sector, with NERC’s latest reports revealing 112 electricity-related deaths and 95 injuries in 2024.
They urged the judiciary to take a proactive stance in enforcing safety regulations and holding operators accountable.
The seminar provides a platform for judicial officers to deepen their understanding of the sector’s complexities and the dual legal frameworks that govern it.
The CJN and AGF commended the organizers for their commitment to justice, capacity building, and nation-building, and encouraged participants to engage actively and collaborate toward innovative solutions.
