Amnesty International has condemned in strong terms what it described as the brazen invasion of the headquarters building of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja by a contingent of armed security personnel.
In a statement, the Director Amnesty International Nigeria, Isa Sanusi said the chilling raid last night, August 7, 2024 appears to be part of a sinister and calculated attacks designed to intimidate the Labour union.
The Amnesty international Nigerian Director said that the raid by security personnel undermines workers’ rights to organize, bargain collectively, and take industrial actions.
Sanusi remarked that during what the Amnesty International calls the lawless raid, the armed security personnel “ransacked books at the bookshop carrying all the materials into their van, claiming that the materials were used to incite and organise the recent protest.”
The International civil rights group said it is deeply concerned about the safety of NLC officials, noting that under international human rights law and standards, trade unions can not be targeted for their participating activities.
He stated further that under international human rights law, Nigeria has an obligation not only to respect the rights of trade unions, but also to protect these rights from abuse.”
