The leader of Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Edwin Clark has called for the arrest of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike over his recent threats to governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Clark, in an open letter to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, described Wike’s comments as “treasonable” and a “flagrant disrespect” to President Bola Tinubu.
He emphasized that Wike’s threats to “put fire” in states belonging to PDP governors constitute a serious breach of Nigerian law and could incite violence.
Clark highlighted the inconsistency in government’s response to dissent, recalling that the Presidential Candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, and #EndBadGovernance protesters were arrested for similar offences.
He urged the IGP to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of the political crisis, which he says could have dire consequences for Nigeria as a whole.
He described Wike’s comments as a “macabre dance” and warned that such rhetoric could lead to significant unrest in the region.
Clark underscored the gravity of the situation, asserting that Wike’s actions threaten the peace and stability of Rivers State and the broader Niger Delta region.
The PANDEF leader emphasized that no citizen, regardless of his or her position, has the right to threaten the peace of the country and should not be treated with kid gloves.
He reminded the police chief of his oath to uphold the law and maintain order, urging him to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of the political crisis.
The PDP has been embroiled in internal conflicts, with Wike and other party leaders at odds over control of the party’s structure in Rivers State.
The Inspector General of Police has yet to respond to Clark’s call for Wike’s arrest.
