The nominee for Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Idi Abba has outlined his plans to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime security through the deployment of advanced technology and a more coordinated operational framework.

He explained that while structures already exist to curb maritime crimes, his focus will be on improving their efficiency through the use of technology , particularly unmanned aerial systems to enhance surveillance and reduce resource wastage.

Addressing a question from Senator Wadada on enhancing security along inland waterways, especially the Benue Lokoja corridor, the nominee disclosed that the Navy has already established a Special Operations Command headquartered in Makurdi, Benue State, to tackle emerging challenges in those areas.

On the proposal to create a Coast Guard, raised by Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the nominee firmly opposed the idea, describing it as unnecessary and a duplication of functions.

Speaking on the persistent issue of oil theft and illegal bunkering, he noted that many of these activities occur in hard to reach areas, making monitoring and intervention difficult.

He explained that although some of the thefts may appear minimal, their cumulative effect translates into significant economic losses.

On the de-radicalization of repentant insurgents, the nominee aligned with the Chief of Army Staff’s view that it remains a positive step toward national reconciliation, but cautioned that it must be approached with sensitivity.

He stated that though de-radicalization is a good initiative, but it must be handled carefully

He stated that these are people who have killed and maimed others and reintegrating them without consulting the families of their victims could cause resentment.

Responding to further questions on emerging security threats, the nominee highlighted the Navy’s Total Spectrum Maritime Strategy, which addresses diverse challenges including piracy, kidnapping, banditry, and oil theft.

He concluded by reaffirming the Navy’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and national security, emphasizing that collective effort and technological advancement remain crucial to safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime and inland waterways.
