Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU have rejected what they described as the continued neglect of products from the Colleges of education as head of its regulatory agency, the National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, blaming the development for the persistent woes in the sub-sector
In a press statement signed by COEASU President, Lawan Ahmed, the lecturers argued that other regulatory agencies like the National Universities Commission, NUC and National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, all have their executive secretaries appointed within the institutions.
As the tenure of the current Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Colleges of Education Commission, NCCE approaches its conclusion in March 2026, stakeholders in teachers’ education are reflecting on a question of national importance: how best to sustain the ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s Colleges of Education system.
The Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU which is a major stakeholder is commending the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, for his contributions to the sector, especially on the full implementation of the Dual Mandate..
The Dual Mandate allows the Colleges to issue both degree and the National Certificate of Education. (NCE).
COEASU is also commending the firm stance in protecting revitalization of funding to Colleges
Beyond these reforms, a critical issue worries COEASU, which is continuity, stability, and credibility in the leadership of the National Commission for Colleges of Education, NCCE, which it said has lacked professionals as its Executive Secretary for years.
COEASU President, Lawan Ahmed while blaming the development for the woes in the sub-sector, insists that experience across Nigeria’s tertiary education system shows that regulatory bodies function best when they are led by professionals within the sectors they supervise.
According to Ahmed, such a decision will not only promote fairness and help deepen the implementation of the Dual Mandate Act, it will strengthen curriculum development, sustain revitalization initiatives, and improve the quality of teacher education nationwide.
He argued that appointing a tested Colleges-of-Education professional will also bring stability to teacher education to ensure sustainable development
While urging stakeholders to support the decision, COEASU said it will bring more accolades not only to the government, but stability to the subsector
