The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is advocating for total compliance with the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Prohibition Act 2018.
This was the focus at the Northeast Zonal Town Hall Meeting, held in Yola the Adamawa State capital.
Section Twenty nine of the Discrimination Against Persons With Disabilities Act 2018, provides that five per cent of employment be reserved across Ministries, departments and Agencies.
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities, Lalu James, said they have embarked on an awareness campaign to check the level of compliance of this legislation by relevant stakeholders across the country.
Lalu also revealed that the commission is collaborating with the Nigeria Police, to create Disability State Offices, across the Nations Police Commands, to enable people to report cases of discrimination against persons with disabilities.
The State Chairman, Spinal Cord Injury Association Of Nigeria, Adamawa Chapter Sanusi Adamu, stressed the need for the inclusion of accessible structures in public and private places.
It is also noteworthy, that discrimination against persons with disabilities is now a criminal offence, in Nigeria.
