Commonwealth Ministers meet at 79th UNGA

Foreign Ministers from Commonwealth member states have met on the sidelines of the ongoing UN General Assembly in New York to review the socio-political and economic challenges in some member countries of the bloc, with a view to having a clearer picture ahead of its October summit

The meeting chaired by the Rwandan Foreign Affairs minister, Olivier Nduhungirehe, was an opportunity for members to review some achievements in the last one year.

The Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa, briefed the meeting on preparedness for hosting the October summit which has its theme, ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming Our Common Wealth’.

The bloc’s Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland who addressed the meeting expressed gratitude for the cooperation and support of Commonwealth member countries during her 2 terms and reaffirmed her belief in the Commonwealth’s unique potential to lead global efforts in addressing the world’s most urgent challenges.

The Commonwealth Foreign Ministers meeting concluded with the bloc affirming its role as a driving force for positive change on the global stage with kudos for the resolution of the political upheaval in Cyprus, Belize, Guyana, and Bangladesh.
