Uneasy calm pervades the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday as National Chairman, Abdullahi Adamu announced President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan as consensus candidate of the party for 2023 Presidential election.
Adamu made the announcement at a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.
The announcement of Lawan immediately sparked reactions from some members of the (NWC), accusing the National Chairman of taking a unilateral decision.
The choice of Lawan comes as shocking to many less than two days after 11 Northern APC Governors and leaders of the party advised the party to zone APC Presidential ticket to the South.
This was as President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday told the Northern Governors and the National Working Committee of the party to come up with a consensus candidate for the election.
APC National convention is scheduled for Tuesday.
The nomination of Ahmed Lawan will have to be ratified at the convention.
The emergence of Lawan may have signalled a death knell on the aspirations of the likes of Former Governor of Lagos State Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Ameachi from the South.
It may also have put paid on the hope of returning power to the South at the end of Buhari’s eight years reign.
