The Nigerian Senate has expressed support for a political affirmative action that will ensure greater representation for women in the country.
President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan stated this when the upper legislative chamber received the report of the Constitution Review Committee on the 5th Alteration Bill, 2022.
Lawan said the Senate under his watch is gender sensitive and welcomes the move to widen the political space for women in the country; stressing that such affirmative action for women will contribute immensely to Nigeria’s growth and development.

The report was laid in a ceremonious session on Wednesday with the Wife of the President, Aisha Buhari accompanied by the Minister of Women Affairs, Paulin Tallen, and the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed.
Aisha Buhari’s appearance was in solidarity and in support of a provision in the Alteration bill that seeks permanent legislative seats for women in the National and the State Houses of Assembly.
