There have been robust efforts to revamp the textile industry in Nigeria as two genetically modified cotton varieties approved by the National Biotechnology Development Agency are being introduced to cotton farmers across the nation.
A field day to assess the seed performance of the hybrid was conducted in Adamawa State.
Cotton farming being the bedrock of the textile and garment sector over the years has suffered a setback, due to the unproductiveness of cotton farming, arising from pest infestation and low yield among others.
A field day, which took place at Kem, in Shelleng local government area of Adamawa state, had stirred up the excitement in cotton farmers to return back to their farms.

The deputy director at the National Biotechnology Development Agency, Rose Maxwell Gidado, said, the introduction of the cotton varieties will reduce cost and improve yield in cotton production.
The cotton farmers after learning about the technologically improved cotton varieties recount the challenges they experienced in the past.
They are hopeful that the hybrid seeds will revive cotton production.

With the introduction of the modified cotton varieties, it is hope that Nigeria’s textile and garment industry will be revived and the country will become a global player in the cotton trade.
