Covid-19: Abia State maintains ban on public gatherings; use of facemasks

The Abia State Government has said that the ban on public gatherings and compulsory use of facemasks in public places remains in effect as the second wave of COVID-19 takes its toll on Nigeria.

To this end, the state has concluded plans to flag off what it calls Abia COVID-19 Awareness Day to ensure strict compliance with the protocols to curtail the spread of the virus.

The Chairman of the State Inter-Ministerial Committee on COVID-19 and Secretary to the State Government, Chris Ezem stated this at a meeting with Traditional Rulers Council, religious leaders, security agencies and select stakeholders in the state at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.

According to the SSG, the second wave of COVID-19 cannot be taken for granted as the records from NCDC gets even more frightening by the day.

The Commissioner for Health, Joe Osuji however observed a disturbing trend in spread of the second wave of the deadly Coronavirus when he disclosed that in the first nine months of the outbreak of the pandemic, Abia State recorded a total of 1,015 positive cases, but has recorded over 300 cases in January 2021 alone.
