With agriculture accounting for a significant portion of Cross River State’s economy, the government’s latest initiative to empower local farmers, particularly in Yakurr local government area of the state could prove crucial, in securing food supplies and driving economic growth.
The state governor, Bassey Otu made the commitment during the 19th edition of the Leboku International Festival, held in Ugep.
In a statement delivered by Deputy Governor Peter Odey, who represented Governor Bassey Otu at the festival, the administration announced its strategic focus on advancing the cultivation of key crops such as yam, rice, cassava, palm trees and cocoa.
The government’s strategy includes the procurement of both light and heavy-duty machinery, the distribution of fertilizer to local farmers and also grants.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Events Management, Effiong Ekpenyong, highlighted the government’s initiative to reward local farmers with prizes, thereby encouraging the production of yam, cassava, and other essential crops.
Earlier, Deputy Governor Peter Odey and his entourage were warmly received by the Paramount Ruler of Yakurrr, His Royal Majesty Obol Ofem Ubana Eteng, at his palace.

The Leboku International festival not only celebrates the region’s rich cultural heritage, but also underscores the government’s dedication to fostering agricultural excellence in Cross River State.
