The highest authority in the selection and election of who occupies the throne of the Obong of Calabar, the Etubom Conclave of Efik kingdom, has re-selected and proclaimed His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi-Otu V as the Obong of Calabar.
The reselection was as a result of January 13, 2023, Supreme Court judgement in Abuja which upheld the Court of Appeal’s position on the matter.
Speaking at the Palace of the Obong of Calabar on Wednesday night, the Chairman of the Etubom in- Council, Etubom Bassey Duke said,the Council complied with the court order by conducting another selection process and declared Abasi-Otu as the successor to the throne.

He said the selection was in line with due process and signed by the relevant authorities from all the ruling houses.
The Supreme Court on January 13, 2023, dismissed Etubom Anthony Ani’s suit for lack of merit and upheld the Appeal Court judgement of 2013 which ordered for a re-selection of Ekpo-Okon Abasi-Otu and others excluding Ani.
