The Cross River State Government has confirmed its first case of Mpox in Okoshe community, Obudu Local Government Area of the state.
This was disclosed by the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Egbe Ayuk, at a media briefing in Calabar.
Dr Ayuk said the patient initially sought treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, where her symptoms led to further investigation.
Dr Ayuk disclosed that the index case, a woman from Okoshe community was diagnosed and confirmed by the National Reference Laboratory in Abuja, after seeking treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
Following the confirmation, the state government has activated the Mpox Emergency Operation Center, initiating contact tracing, quarantine measures and a public awareness campaign.
In addition to immediate containment efforts, the State Epidemiologist, Inyang Ekpenyong, outlined long-term strategies including the establishment of isolation wards in government hospitals, and ongoing health promotion and personal hygiene advocacy.
The state government is urging residents to stay informed, follow health guidelines, and report any suspected cases to their nearest health facility.
