No fewer than 40 persons including politicians are to be prosecuted by the Cross River State Anti-Tax Agency for their alleged involvement in extorting money from petty traders against government directives.
Chairman of the State Anti-Tax Agency, Bishop Emmah Isong, made his known in Calabar while addressing journalists on its activities one year after it began operations.
Isong stated that the Agency would not relent in confronting those giving the State Government a bad image, despite the Governor’s directive.
He said the 40 persons for prosecution would face the law, no matter how highly placed in the society.

Other officials of the Agency while calling for support and collaboration said all the local government areas in Cross River State have keyed into the fight against illegal taxation.
The illegal tax collectors usually intimidate g and harass small shop owners, taxi drivers and tricycle operators against warnings of the State Government on tax relief to low income earners.
