CROSS RIVER
Cross River Governor, Bassey Otu

With a dwindling workforce of just a little above 18,000 workers at both the local and the state government levels, the Government of Cross River State has expressed its determination to reposition the workforce by engaging the services of qualified candidates to fill up the gaps created by those who have retired from the service.

State Head of Service,, Innocent Eteng, in a chat with AIT.live at his office in Calabar, the state capital, said although the embargo on employment was still in force, he assured that the government was working towards lifting the ban on employment.

Governor Bassey Otu, had upon resumption of office, ordered the suspension of recruitment of workers into the state civil service which was started his predecessor, Ben Ayade, till further notice. He also directed all those in the state civil service to subject themselves to screening and documentation for repositioning of the state civil service to meet modern-day service delivery objectives, as well as enable the government to plan effectively for the overall good of the workers.

Eteng said the earlier recruitment process was a little marred by several irregularities. The State Head of Service who also spoke on the productivity of civil servants, said as the engine room of the State Government, the service was poised to deliver on its mandate.

He also listed out some of the reforms put in place by his administration to ensure that the workers delivered optimally, as he assured them of the State Government’s resolve to prioritise their welfare.

AIT live gathered that the embargo on employment was lifted by the former Governor, Ben Ayade a few days before his exit from office, following the huge number of civil servants who retired at the time.
