In a dramatic turn of events, 17 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly on Wednesday impeached the Speaker, Elvert Ayambem, accusing him of financial misconduct and flouting the rule of law.
This decisive move, backed by two-thirds majority of the 25-member House ofAssembly, stems from allegations that Ayambem diverted funds intended for Assembly operations into his personal accounts.
The impeachment motion was introduced by the member representing Calabar South 1, Effiong Ekarika and was followed by a symbolic seizure of the legislative mace after a vote of no confidence.

Speaking to journalists after the impeachment, member representing Bekwarra State Constituency, Omang Omang outlined the specifics of the misappropriation claims against Ayambem.
Also, Assembly members criticised Ayambem for his alleged disrespectful and autocratic leadership style.
In response to the unfolding situation, security personnel have been deployed to secure the Assembly premises.
The lawmakers are expected to convene in the coming days to elect a new Speaker and restore order.
