Some youths from different parts of Cross River State have staged a peaceful protest in Ugep, Yakurr Local Government Area, over the ongoing process of appointing a new Rector for the Federal Polytechnic, Ugep.

The protest, which is the second on the same issue, saw the youths march through major streets of the town, demanding from the Federal Government, the appointment of an indigene of the State to head the institution.

Chanting solidarity songs, the protesters displayed placards with inscriptions such as “Justice for FedPoly Ugep” and “Indigenous Rector, Our Right,” as they drew attention to what they described as “concerns” over fairness in the appointment process.

While addressing the Press, the protesters say their demand is based on the belief that an indigene would better understand the peculiar challenges of the institution and its host community.

They maintained that the demonstration was peaceful and aimed at bringing to the notice of the Federal Government, the National Assembly, and the Minister of Education their deep concerns.

While warning that the protest could be extended to Calabar and Abuja, if their appeal is not addressed, the protesters reiterated their commitment to dialogue and peaceful engagement.

The protest highlights growing concerns over the appointment process of the yet to be announced new Rector of the Federal government owned higher institution.
