Concerned citizens and the Nigerian Police in Adamawa State have called for intensive awareness campaigns to stem the tides of
human trafficking in the country.

The group and the Police made the call at a seminar in Adamawa State on Thursday.

According to the organizers, human trafficking, a form of modern-day slavery involving the illegal transport of individuals by force or deception for the purpose of labour, sexual exploitation, or activities for financial benefits is gaining grounds in the country and urgent steps must be taken to stop the trend.

The group said the social mishap is a global problem with about 1 million people trafficked each year.

Director of the Symbols of Hope Project, Emmanuel Gabriel said trafficked persons are exposed to a range of health related problems, physical violence, sexual exploitation and psychological abuses.

His position is corroborated by Superintendent of Police, Otobore Godday, who said the Police is poised to expose those involved in the criminal act.
