Katsina Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service has confirmed an incident involving some of its personnel shooting at the convoy of the Katsina State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ya’u Gwajo-Gwajo, on Tuesday morning.

The spokesman of the command, Danbaba Isah said the incident occurred when the commissioner’s convoy was moving from Daura to Mai’adua Local Government Area.

Isah said, the officers involved have been taken into custody at the Katsina Police Headquarters for investigations and further action.

Though he did not say whether there were casualties, reports are still sketchy as to what led to the incident.

Daura-Mai’adua road is often used by smugglers who move in their contraband from neighbouring Niger Republic into the state.

Isah, further added that the Acting Area Comptroller of Customs, Dalha Wada, has been to the scene of the incident to investigate what happened.

He promised that the command will as soon as possible, make public, the details of what happened, at the end of investigations.

It could be recalled that the incident is coming almost a month after a patrol vehicle of the service got involved in an accident in Jibiya Local Government Area, while chasing a smuggler, allegedly carrying 2 bags of rice on a motorcycle, killing 10 and injuring 20 others.

That incident generated heated condemnations from within and outside the state, including the state Governor Aminu Masari.
