The annual gathering of World leaders under the auspices of the United Nations, UN General Assembly has opened with the General Secretary, Antonio Guterres saying in his opening speech that “our world is heading off the rails – and we need tough decisions to get back on track.”
With the theme: “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations”, the UN scribe said civilians were paying the price for the war between Russia and Ukraine now in its 31st month. He added that a “humanitarian catastrophe” was unfolding in Sudan and Gaza and other parts of the Middle East.

Calling for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas, Guterres also said nothing can justify the “collective punishment of the Palestinian people.”
He said what was happening was a “level of impunity which is politically indefensible and morally intolerable”.
