Mahamat Idris Deby Itino has been sworn in as the 7th President of Chad after three years of military rule.
The inauguration ceremony took place on Thursday in N’Djamena, Chad, with President Bola Tinubu and several African leaders in attendance.
Mahamat Déby succeeded his late father, Idriss Deby Itino, who died on the front lines in Northern Chad in 2021 after ruling the country for over thirty years since a coup in the early 1990s.
This transition makes Chad the first of six junta-led States in West and Central Africa to hold elections following a series of coups over the past four years, which have further destabilized the region.
President Deby Itino won the May 6 elections with over 60% of the votes against two other candidates.
President Bola Tinubu, who is also the President of ECOWAS, led the Nigerian delegation to the inauguration.
