Detained Journalist faces trial after 82 days in Jail

Defamation case between a Kaduna based journalists, Luka Biniyat and the Kaduna State government over a publication alleging genocide in Southern Kaduna will be heard on Thursday 27 January.

The case comes up after the journalist has been in custody for 82 days
without trial.

Counsel to Biniyat, Barrister Ogeh Emmanuel who disclosed this said the matter has finally been assigned to a judge of the Federal High Court since the Magistrate court does not have jurisdiction over the matter.

Emmanuel said all administrative procedures have been concluded for the trial to begin.

Commenting on the matter, President of Southern Kaduna People’s Union, Jonathan Asake said the court proceeding has taken too long.

It will be recalled that Luka Biniyat was arrested by the Police and has since been in jail without trial.
