Former Emir of Maru in Zamfara State, North-West Nigeria, Abubakar Ibrahim, has filed a suit at the Federal High Court Gusau, seeking to restrain the Inspector-General of Police, Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, and the State Director of the Department of State Services, DSS from further arrest, unlawful detention and defamation of character.

The Emir who was dethroned by the State Government last year for his alleged involvement in banditry activities has been kept at the Government House in Gusau for 11 months.

In his application, the deposed Emir is also asking the court to compel the respondents to pay him N6.5 billion as the damage for his unlawful arrest, detention, and assassination of character.

The respondents in the matter are the Inspector-General of Police, Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, the DSS State Director, and Secretary to the Zamfara State Government.

After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Justice Fatima Aminu transferred the case to the Zamfara State High Court for continuation.

Counsel to the plaintiff, Abubakar Aliyu, said his client filed a motion seeking an order of injunction restraining all the respondents from further arrest or rearrest, in breach of his fundamental human rights.

The defense counsel however told journalists that the court dismissed the application filed by the applicant seeking to set aside the earlier order of transferring the case to the Zamfara State High Court.
