Abubakar Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has formally defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, pledging to work for the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
Popularly known as “Abba,” the younger Atiku was received on Thursday at the National Assembly by the Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, alongside key APC leaders from the North-East geo-political zone.
Party leaders described the defection as a major boost to the APC’s consolidation efforts ahead of the next general election.
Speaking at the event, Abubakar Atiku Abubakar Jnr. announced his resignation from the PDP and declared his full alignment with the APC, describing the decision as both historic and deeply personal.
He also directed all coordinators and members of the political organisation he founded in 2022 formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation to immediately align with the APC and support President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Welcoming him into the party, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, described the defection as symbolic and far-reaching, noting that it reflects what he termed politics without borders.
Salihu stressed that the APC is a progressive party driven by ideology and policy rather than personal ambition, assuring the new entrant of equal rights and privileges within the party.
In his remarks, Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, congratulated Abba on what he described as a bold, wise, and principled decision, assuring him and his supporters of full support within the APC.
Barau disclosed that Abba, who had been closely following political developments from the United States, is impressed by the Tinubu administration’s reforms and outreach initiatives, which informed his decision to return home and join the APC.
The highlight of the event was the renaming of Abba’s political association from Haske Atiku Organisation to Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, signalling a complete realignment of its structure and mission ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Atiku Abubakar has described his son, Abba Abubakar’s decision to join the APC as a purely personal choice.
In a post on his Facebook and X pages, Atiku said such decisions are not unusual in a democracy, even when political choices intersect with family relationships.
He stressed that, as a committed democrat, he does not coerce his children on matters of conscience and would never seek to impose his will on Nigerians.
Atiku, however, expressed deep concern over what he described as the APC’s poor governance and the severe economic and social hardships faced by Nigerians under its leadership.
He reaffirmed his commitment to working with like minded patriots to restore good governance and provide Nigerians with a credible alternative that offers relief, hope, and progress.
