The Nigerian Senate has renamed the ad-hoc committee investigating the importation of hazardous petroleum products to the Ad-hoc Committee to Investigate Alleged Economic Sabotage in the Nigerian Petroleum Industry.
This change follows a motion presented by Senate Leader, Opeyemi Bamidele, who also chairs the ad-hoc committee.
Bamidele noted that the original title did not adequately reflect the scope of the investigation sought in the motion sponsored by Senator Asuquo Ekpeyong last week.
He further explained that some agencies mentioned in the motion and prayers had been delisted or renamed pursuant to the enactment of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).
The Senate had set up a 15-member ad-hoc committee last week after Chairman of the Senate Committee on NDDC, Asuquo Ekpenyong, moved a motion to investigate the continued importation of hazardous petroleum products.
Ekpenyong’s motion alleged that the imported diesel fell below Nigerian standards regarding flash and sulfur levels.
The ad-hoc committee, chaired by Bamidele, comprises Senators Adams Oshiomhole, Abdul Ningi, Osita Izunazo, Ifeanyi Uba, Diket Plang, Mohammed Monguno, Abdullah Yahaha, Olamilekan Solomon, Khabeeb Mustapha, Shahabi Ya’u, and Tokunbo Abiru.
