Nigeria and Ghana will battle for the ultimate prize in the inaugural WAFU U-17 Girls’ Cup on Sunday and on the same day the home-based senior men will clash in Accra in the first leg of the 8th African Nations Championship qualifying fixture

On Thursday night, in the second semi-final of the WAFU U-17 Girls’ Cup, World Cup quarter-finalists Nigeria defeated their counterparts from Benin Republic 2-0, both goals came in the second half of the encounter at the Ghana Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

Sunday’s final will also take place at the same centre, outside Accra.

The Flamingos reached the final after scoring 14 goals in three matches, conceding only two.

They will be confident against a Ghanaian side that defeated Cote d’Ivoire’s girls 5-0 earlier in the afternoon to reach Sunday’s final.

Meanwhile, coach of the home based Eagles, Daniel Ogunmodede says the intense rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana will spur the team to victory in their 2024 African Nations Championship qualifier.

The home Eagles will be aiming for revenge in the two-legged contest.

The Black Galaxies stopped Nigeria from qualifying for the last edition of the competition hosted by Algeria.

Ogunmodede stated that his players are motivated to beat the Ghanaians this time around.

The young tactician also emphasised the importance of his team securing a ticket in the competition.

The first leg will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday.
